'Supersized' monarch butterflies evolved to fly far


Monarch butterflies that migrate vast distances have grown larger bodies and wings, researchers have discovered.
These "super sized" butterflies have evolved to cope with the demands of long-distance flight.
In contrast, monarchs that live in one place all year have wings that are up to 20% smaller, report scientists in the journal Evolution.
Monarch butterflies undergo the longest recorded two-way migration of any insect.
Up to four generations of monarch butterfly complete a round trip of up to 8,000km, flying between northern US and Canada and Mexico in search of warmer temperatures.
Numerous studies have shown that species that migrate tend to evolve longer wings than those that do not.
But the new study is one of the first to show that populations within the same species can also evolve differently-shaped wings depending on their lifestyle.
"We were surprised that average wing size differences between migratory and non-migratory monarchs were so striking and consistent," says Professor Sonia Altizer of the University of Georgia, in Athens, US.
"Our findings indicate that large, elongated wings are better for monarchs that undertake long distance flights."
Despite being famous for flying such long distances, many monarch butterflies do not migrate at all.

"When most people think about monarchs, they associate them with this incredible migration in North America, but a lot of people don't realise that monarchs also inhabit tropical locations such as Central America, the Caribbean islands, and Pacific islands, where they can breed year-round," explains Professor Altizer.
She and her colleague and husband Mr Andrew Davis, a PhD student at the University of Georgia, used digital imaging techniques to photograph and analyse the size of monarch butterflies from either wild migratory or non-migratory populations.
As well as width, the photographic technique allowed the researchers to precisely measure the surface area of each wing.
"Comparing the largest to the smallest population, wings of monarchs from eastern North America are 20% larger than those from Puerto Rico. Averaging across all populations, migratory monarchs have wings that are 14% larger than non-migratory monarchs," says Professor Altizer.
The researchers also reared monarch butterflies in the lab from different populations, to show that large wings were inherited, having a genetic basis, rather than being produced by butterflies in response to environmental factors such as warmer temperatures.

"That further supports the idea that differences between wild monarch populations are caused by evolution," says Professor Altizer.
"What we don't know is [exactly how much] this improves the flight performance of migratory monarchs; that would be an important next step."
Another surprise is that, although migratory monarchs from both the east and west coasts have large wings, the bodies of western monarchs are around 8% smaller than eastern monarchs.
This indicates that they might be better adapted to soaring or gliding flight as opposed to powered flight and speed, says Professor Altizer.
"A final surprise was that monarchs from Hawaii were small, but had the most angular wings," she adds.
"It would be interesting to know why that is. For example, do some monarchs in Hawaii cross the ocean to move around between islands?"
Professor Altizer and Mr Davis hope to measure differences in flight performance between individual monarchs with different wing traits, testing their speed and endurance.

Skydiver Felix Baumgartner seeks to break sound barrier




The Austrian extreme sportsman Felix Baumgartner says his next goal is to try to break the long-standing record for the highest ever parachute jump.
It is 50 years since the American Joe Kittinger made history by leaping from a balloon at 102,800ft (31km).
Many have sought to repeat the feat down the decades but all have failed.
Baumgartner, who is famous for stunts such as jumping off the Petronas Towers, aims to skydive from a balloon sent to at least 120,000 ft (37km).
It is likely that in his long freefall of more than five minutes, he will exceed the speed of sound - the first person to do so without the aid of a machine.

"The effects of the transition from subsonic through transonic to supersonic velocity and back again are not known. This is just one of the things we'll learn."

Baumgartner and his supporters claim the project will gather scientific data also about the stratosphere and how the body copes with the extreme conditions so high above the Earth's surface.
The most recent attempt to try to better Kittinger's mark was made in 2008 by the Frenchman Michel Fournier.
The former paratrooper and adventurer had spent years preparing for "Le Grand Saut", or Big Jump, only to see his balloon break free and float off into the sky just as he was about to climb inside the ascent capsule.

Baumgartner has frequently incurred the ire of the authorities because of his base-jumping - the highly dangerous practice of parachuting from buildings. He also made headlines in 2003 when he crossed the English Channel on a carbon wing strapped to his back.
His assault on Kittinger's record is likely to take place later this year over an as yet unnamed location in North America. He will ascend to the stratosphere in a pressurized capsule attached to a high-altitude helium balloon, and then jump out at an altitude he hopes will exceed 120,000ft.
He will be wearing a specially modified full-pressure suit and helmet.
The organisers of the project called Red Bull Stratos say, if all goes well, he should break the speed of sound about 35 seconds into his descent.
Joe Kittinger's 16 August 1960 jump was an extraordinary achievement. It was made nine months before Alan Shepard was even launched on the first American sub-orbital space trip.
Kittinger experienced intense swelling in his right hand as his glove malfunctioned and his body reacted to the low pressure at high altitude.
The retired USAF colonel is now supporting the Austrian in his endeavour.
As well as coping with freezing temperatures and ultra-thin air, a key objective for Baumgartner must be to try to maintain a correct attitude during the descent and prevent his body from going into a spin and blacking out.
"Looking at the bigger picture, it's clear that we have a unique opportunity to support science in a very specific field," he said.
"Maybe one day it will be possible to bring astronauts home safely from space if their spacecraft malfunctions. It sounds like a sci-fi scenario, but aeronautics is definitely moving in that direction."
Michel Fournier has promised to make another attempt in 2010 also, if he can secure the funding.

Elephant kills US tourists in Kenya

An American tourist and her one-year-old child have been trampled to death by an elephant in Kenya, officials say.
They were walking in a group in Mount Kenya Forest with a tour guide when the elephant attacked.

"The woman and her daughter died on the spot. The others escaped unhurt because they were able to run," AFP news agency quoted a police officer as saying.
The owner of the lodge where the group were staying told Kenya's Nation paper the elephant attacked from behind.
Melin Van Laar told the paper the lodge's management and the Kenya Wildlife Service were discussing the possibility for providing the guides with guns.
The 39-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, was on holiday with her husband - who reportedly survived the incident.
The victims' bodies have been flown to the capital, Nairobi.
Stampeding elephants can reach top speeds of about 25mph (40km/h).
